Why own a Gransfors Bruks Axe?
At AxeTools.com we are huge fans of the axe maker Gransfors Bruks. Sure, you can definitely get some work done with a much cheaper axe from the hardware store, but you’ll work twice as hard and you won’t enjoy handling and working with the mass market stuff. Those mass produced axes aren’t even sharp. There is no comparison. If you search the web for Axe reviews, you’ll see often the reviewers will compare other axes to the Gransfors. You’ll find plenty of written material, and a number of reviews on YouTube as well. It won’t take long to see that if you want the state of the art in Axes and Hatchets, get the Gransfors Bruks.
Hand Made in Sweden since 1902
The Gransfors American Felling Axe is a professional axe for those who want to work in the forest in the traditional way. The axe is ideal for felling very large trees, thanks to its long, broad edge of 11.5 cm. The axe is forged to a curved bit, making it suitable for cutting into fresh, resinous wood such as spruce or pine.
The Gransfors Bruks Axe heavy head and long handle also give considerable power to the cut. The axe is almost twice as heavy as the Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe. The base of the handle is flared to enable a secure hold without exerting a lot of pressure with the hands. When chopping for an extended time with full, powerful strokes, a wood handle offers much more comfort than steel or fiberglass because of wood’s ability to dampen vibration and insulate from cold.
Gransfors Bruks Felling Axe Handle Options

The shape of the head does vary slightly (you can see this well in the enlargements) to better match the head to the straight or curved handle.
Axe Blade Extremely Sharp
These Axes are extremely sharp when Gransfors Bruks ships them. (People generally do not expect this, so the previous statement is emphasized.) The heads are aligned exactly with the hickory handles (helves) and attached rock-solid with one or two wedges driven thru the helves. The handles themselves are something special. Straight grain Georgia hickory, no knots, no imperfections. All Gransfors Bruks handles are soaked in hot linseed oil, then covered lightly with Beeswax to repel dirt. The finish feels exceptionally nice in the hand, and nobody who sees them can keep his (or her) hands off!
