Hultafors Classic Trekking Axe is a small, practical outdoors axe, hand-forged and made from Swedish axe steel using traditional methods in use since 1697. The steel is stuck several times, increasing its density and thereby the durability of the axe. Excellent for use in the great outdoors, can tackle most jobs.
- Can be attached to a belt.
- Has a clear hard zone within which the axe can be sharpened whilst not detracting from the strength of the edge.
- An edge protector (item no. 840765) is included with the axe, but is also available to purchase separately as a spare.
- Hickory shaft.
- Presented in a gift box.
- Hultafors – Trekking Axe. Model HUL840701. 15″ overall. 5 1/2″ Swedish axe steel head with 3″ cutting edge. Hickory wood shaft. Axe head has clear tempered zone allowing for sharpening of the axe without detracting from the strength of the edge. Lanyard hole. Brown leather sheath.
I did a lot of research on upper-end hatchets before deciding on this one. At some point, the details of it all started to blur:all of the Scandinavian products receive sterling reviews from those who know more about this that I ever will. Grans Bruks, Wetterling etc all seem to be far above the field of the hardware-store hatchet I have been using for many years. I decided on this one for a number of reasons: I like the cord attachment on the leather “sheath”– easier than a snap for my aging and arthritic hands; it is one of the originals of the breed of Scandi woods tools; the length of the handle suits me a does the weight of the head at one pound (not too heavy or light– just right!). It was a few dollars less than the other two hatchets I mentioned (who knew you can pay hundreds of dollars for such a simple tool). So. I received it yesterday and all I can say is wow! You can’t describe the feel of a really good tool in the hand until you have experienced it which I haven’t, at least with hatchets. It is ruggedly made, cuts like a beaver, and the balance in the hand is perfect. A subtle but important feature. Sorry I waited so long to buy one of these. I am very impressed and heartily recommend this ax.
4.5 Stars – Nice Hatchet for the money
I was torn between this hatchet, the Granfors Wildlife, and the Wetterling Wildlife. If the Gransfors had been in stock in all honesty I would have purchased it, but it is on a lengthy backorder currently and everyone that has them in stock seems to have raised their prices accordingly. The Wetterling was dismissed due to quality control concerns.
Looks cool, works well.
High degree of cool factor! However, I was bummed to see a small splinter by the steel wedge. I emailed Hultafors and (eventually) they responded to let me know the axe was fine to use as is. (see pic) Still, that’s not something I want to see on a brand new tool; especially when I could have had other above average axes for less money. Complaint aside, it’s a cool axe and I’ve used it several times to split up wood scraps from my shop into kindling. The edge was sharp out of the box…not paper cutting sharp, but sharp…and is still sharp today. If you have the extra cash I’d have no problem recommending you pay up if you like the hand forged story and good looks. It feels light in the hand and works as I expected.
Excellent hatchet for the money!
It didn’t come super sharp, which I expected, but it didn’t take long to put a razor edge on it. I love the way it feels/balance when you are chopping with it. I have a Fiskars hatchet with the 14in black handle. The Fiskars will out chop the Hultafors but the Hultafors is much more enjoyable to use. The leather sheath it comes with works very well but I wouldn’t store it in the sheath due to rust issues. I took it backpacking in the Smokies, hiking with the hatchet strapped to my belt in the provided sheath, the sheath held up fine. I processed 2 days of firewood with it, no chips in the blade :) the weight of the head vs length of the handle works well. I love it! I would buy 2 of these at $80 vs 1 @ $150 for the Gransfors.
The reviews are accurate- this is a heck of an axe!
I did my research, I looked at all the reviews of this and the Granfors Bruk axe, and while there were a couple of reviews of this one that indicated some possible issues (grain of the handle, split handle head, etc.), I decided to purchase this Trekking Axe. I also bought some oil and a stone, as recommended by one purchaser.
Omg this is a fantastic piece of work

This axe and cover with belt loop are great
This axe and cover with belt loop are great. The belt loop works great with an old leather belt I had laying around. This axe is the perfect size for my needs learning bushcraft camping. The quality is great on this axe head, Oak handle and Leather sheath. I am very pleased with this purchase. Now I just have to learn how to use and care for my new axe.
This axe is the nicest one I have ever owned, you can tell it is hand made. It is light in the hand and came hair shaving sharp. I have used it to spilt kindling and create feather sticks to start a fire, works great for duing fine work. Also comes with a fine leather sheath with a simple leather holding strap. It is 15″ overall so small enough to to fit in a pack but large enough to do most camp work. I only wish there was an American dealer selling the Hultafors Hunting Axe and I would buy it as well. You definitely won’t regret purchasing this hatchet.
You just have to appreciate things that are made by people, for people. Superb quality and craftsmanship went into making this and it has to be held and used to understand it. There are others out there for a lot more and a lot less, but overall this Hultafors Trekking Axe cannot be beat.
Really don’t have enough good things to say about this axe. Extremely well made and comfortable to hold for both cutting down a small tree or small tight work like splitting small pieces of wood or beginning a carving project. Holding it at the neck feels very natural and gives a lot of control
