Hultafors Classic Hunting Axe 850G  is a slightly more powerful axe with a rounded neck, hand-forged and made from Swedish axe steel using traditional methods in use since 1697.  The steel is stuck several times, increasing its density and thereby the durability of the axe.

Hultadors Hunting Axe is perfect for hunters who both skin animals and carry out light forest work.  Fit and finish are very good, the blade is sharp enough to shave with out of the box.  The Hultafors Classic Hunting 850G Axe holds it’s edge very well with minimal maintenance. It’s a good compromise between size and utility, it has enough weight and length to process firewood effectively. This axe is compact and light enough to carry backpacking.  This axe is a masterpiece and is a pleasure to use.

UPDATE: Happy now

I expect better from this company, the whole reason I purchased from them. A good value if you get a nice one. I really don’t feel I should have to re-hang a new axe. I just don’t have confidence in the condition of this tool. I don’t care as much about cosmetics but the head already has a little play in it. I would appreciate it if the company contacted me so I could send pictures of the haft/eye fit. For some reason the pictures will not post here. I really like the size and feel of the axe, too bad it slipped past QC.

This is a quality axe that is well worth the money.

Let me start off by saying that I love axes. I heat my house by firewood so I handle an axe almost everyday. I own a lot of axes as I went through an ebay phase of buying vintage USA axes to fix up and re-handle. Some of those vintage axes were great and some were not. More times than not, some hack who didn’t know crap about sharpening an axe or setting an edge, ruined the coveted vintage USA axes. I finally bit the bullet and bought a Gransfor’s splitting axe and instantly fell in love with Swedish steel. I could justify spending big money on a splitting axe but not on a smaller hunting axe that I would use for kindling and camping from time to time. I stumbled onto this axe and couldn’t believe the price. It is about a third the cost of a Gransfors and just about as good. The hand forged steel performs and sharpens the same as a Gransfor’s and the tight grained, properly aligned hickory handles are identical. The only real difference that I can tell is that the HB isn’t finished as well as a Gransfors. You’ll read some other reviews on this axe where some corncob is complaining about the leather cover that comes with this axe. Nothing could be further than than the truth. The leather protector that came with this axe is actually better than the ones that come with a Gransfors. It’s better because it encloses the top part of the axe and secures the cover to the axe with an adjustable, simple and easily replaceable leather lace. This simple design is either too mechanical or lacks a shiny snap for some people but suits me just fine. A snap is hard to come by in the Bush but a piece of cordage is not making the HB leather cover superior for anyone who will actually use it as intended. The only real negative is the delivery time. It ships from the UK and took 6 weeks to arrive, but was still worth it.

Everything a Swedish axe should be, and at a great price too!

Holy smokes am I happy I bought this!

looking like a chisel

The axe is a real beauty, the handle grains were almost perfectly straight. This is however a hand made Axe, and you can see the imperfection in the making of the head. Mine came ground much more on one side than the other, giving the cutting edge an almost flat side then an angle on the other, looking like a chisel. This bothers me a little bit, and also when they seated the head onto the shoulder of the handle there are gaps that I filled in with wood glue to prevent moisture getting in there.

I -will- buy this axe again (you can’t have too many)!

I’ve owned many Hultafors axes over the years. Recently I tried out a Hults Bruk’s ‘Scandi’ style axe with a 26″ handle, and I have to say that the hang really couldn’t have been worse. I know these two brand names are, in truth, the same company.. But I have to wonder if maybe they employ two different quality control divisions. So far, every new Hults Bruk branded tool I’ve seen has been a disgrace to it’s origins. Seems the only way to be safe is to go for the ones branded Hultafors. This is the original name anyway.. But in regard to this axe: the head was flawless, the haft’s grain orientation was perfect, and the mask was top notch! I -will- buy this axe again (you can’t have too many)!

Really nice pack axe

Top quality axe at a good price. Fit and finish was very good and sharp enough to use as received. The edge profile was not perfect but very few axes are. I would highly recommend this axe.

Good Axe

The axe weighed in at 2lbs 7oz. Sharp enough to slice a piece of paper. The sheath is functional and thick (1/8 inch thick) and is secured with a leather strap. The handle is 21 inch long Hickory. The wood grain appears pretty straight. Unvarnished which I like to prevent blisters. It is a good value for the price and should give me years of good service.

Awesome backpacking axe

Awesome backpacking axe. The two pound head is heavy enough to make daunting tasks easy. (If your willing to carry the weight) have taken it out many times performs like a champ. Sharp as it gets for an axe, and retains its edge very well. If your on the fence about it go ahead and do it. Hand forged head will last several generations.

Well constructed with good, strong

Sharp! Well constructed with good, strong, materials; this axe feels like an object my kids will inherit. A quality product at a decent price. I’m glad I selected Hultafors.

Awesome axe. Small light weight very sharp. Fantastic leather sheath. Only thing I had to do was run the handle with linseed oil a few times and it was good to go. Bigger Than a hatchet but smaller than a. Felling axe. Can choke up on the handle and use it for making feather sticks etc. extremely well built.
