Helko Vario Review
Helko Vario 2000 Heavy Log Splitter is as powerful as they come. This heavy duty splitting axe is made for the most difficult jobs. The deep wedge combined with the punishing weight delivers a powerful striking force, capable of splitting tree trunks, large logs, and heavy firewood. This tool demands a degree of controlled strength from its operator, due to its size and weight.
The Vario 2000 series features our patented screw system, offering easy interchange-ability of axe blades and handles. Using a simple cap screw retainer and hex key (included), handles may be replaced in a matter of minutes. Because the system is standardized, all blades and handles are completely interchangeable between all Vario 2000 models. All blades are hardened to the German DIN 7287 B manufacturing standard for maximum life and reliability. A built-in safety feature ensures loose heads are kept on the handle, eliminating the risk that they might fly off and strike nearby objects.

Last maul I’ll ever buy.
I am a cheap b@st&rd. I usually buy my lumber tools like most of my stuff–the cheapest option I can find that seems like it will work for me. But I’ve recently been realizing that sometimes, you do get what you pay for. After breaking the plastic handle of a standard-issue hardware store maul, I decided since I use split a fair amount of wood, and this is the kind of thing that could last forever, I would invest in a really nice splitter. I bought this one because I was attracted to the bolt-through head mount and Helko’s reputation. I’m only about 3 hours of use in, but so far, I love it. It feels like it would be too light to use as a heavy splitter (head is only 6.7 lbs), but it is a notable improvement over my previous 8 lb maul–which was cheap but kept very sharp. It even seems to be as good or better as me steel-handled 12-pounder, and SO much more of a pleasure to use. I expect this will be the last splitter I ever buy and my relatives will fight over it when I die.
Great when used as advised and with fairly straight grained rounds.
I love the length of the handle. I like that the mass of the head is concentrated in front of the handle. I don’t mind that if the head does not bite in, it will try to twist on you more than a more traditional splitting maul might. What loses this splitter one star is what happens when it gets stuck. Typically, I would just hoist the maul and offending chunk of wood, then swing the whole thing down onto the splitting block with the maul on the bottom, using the mass of the wood chuck to split itself on the maul. Don’t try this with this splitter – it will crush the handle. I discovered this the hard way when I did this without thinking about it. Then, while you can keep going (they don’t lie about the head not coming off), the handle will continue to deteriorate until it fails. Had to carve a new handle from a pick handle because I needed to finish the job. However, if you just pry the splitter out when it gets stuck, usually it only needs another couple of blows before the offending chunk admits defeat and breaks. So, use as directed and on rounds that with fairly straight grain. One or two well placed blows is typically all it takes, even on green wood. However, if you have to split stumps or similar, reach for the more traditional Helko splitting axe. Between the two, I’ve taken to leaving the wedges in the truck.
Great product and excellent customer service!
I’ve had my Helko Vario 2000 Heavy Splitting Axe for about a month now and I’m extremely happy with it and with the follow up customer service by the staff at Helko North America. I’ve used it on green and seasoned rounds of pine, oak, and poplar. It splits beautifully. The balance is slightly different from a traditional splitting axe or maul and takes a few swings to get used to, but in all, I’m very impressed and pleased with my purchase. The leather sheath on mine Was damaged during shipping. I contacted Helko North America directly as directed in the paperwork that came with the axe. They had a new sheath to me in the mail within days.
Sexiest tool on earth. Period.
I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my non believer in baby Jesus or Christmas boyfriend. Pretty sure due to this gift he will now celebrate Christmas…that’s how awesome this thing is. On a serious note, it truly is a magnificent piece of craftsmanship. Gorgeous right out of the box. My guy is about 5’9”, ok I’m lying…he’s like 5’ 7 1/5” but solid muscle. Splits wood every season with a run-of-the-mill axe. Splits huge pieces, like I can’t even get my arms around them. Splits them now like the axe is moving through hot butter. I guess the shape of the head (Big wedge like thing) he says it doesn’t get stuck in the wood nearly as much and when it does it’s easily removed. The long handle is awesome and makes his swing smoother. So ladies, if you need your lust in your man renewed…buy him this axe. Take his shirt off, hand him the axe and sit back and watch. Men, if you need your manhood renewed…buy this axe. Best money ever spent.
Very effective splitter
This one big mofo. I regularly use a powered splitter, but damn this is too much fun. Easily split 10-24 inch and up rounds in Ponderosa and Log Pole Pine with this beast. There is a learning curve when it comes to control and power. You need to be in reasonable physical condition to swing it. Couch potatoes, stay away, you will just hurt yourself. There is nothing like splitting on a Montana morning at 5,000 feet in the Bitterroot. Buy it if you qualify.
Best axe ever!
I have used a many number of axes. I am not fond of wedges nor mauls my preference has always been a good axe. This axe of Helko’s is astounding! I normally split a cord in about 2 1/2-3 hours splitting elm/cottonwood mix. I did a cord in just under 2 hours with this axe. I split logs I never could with an axe, the design and power you can use with this is unbelievable, the quality of the axe is unsurpassed and the balance of it is near perfect. I would highly recommend this and this company solely for axes above any other. One swing and you’ll know. No more buying junk axes with junk handles at $45-60 a piece. And the overstrike guard is a must on any axe.
When I first received this axe, I was disappointed in the handle, as it was slightly bowed and had a horizontal grain orientation. I called the company and received a level of customer service that is unfortunately very rare these days. The gentleman listened to why I was dissatisfied, apologized and calmly, non defensively explained how the handles are selected and tested for quality. He also explained how to properly use the axe, as it is not a maul or a typical splitting axe. He also reminded me of why it is important not to get tunnel vision with grain ordination on these tools. It can certainly play a roll in the handle quality, but is by no means the most important aspect of the wood to pay attention to. He promptly sent me out a new handle, which is perfect, and happens to have the most vertical grain orientation I’ve ever seen in an axe ;) AND, they said I can keep the other handle to use as a spare should I ever need it.
Extremely well built and effective tool
Extremely well built and effective tool. I’ve used this on a range of seasoned & recently cut wood & it is certainly a step up from my traditional splitting maul. In the photos, this looks like an axe & it feels and handles like an axe, but performs like a splitting maul. The overstrike protection has saved the handle several times so far, but replacement handles (and all other parts) can be purchased from the manufacturer at their North American website (www.helkonorthamerica.com). The unique connecting system is universal, so an axe style head can be purchased and quickly swapped out.
Best splitter ever!!
Awesome tool!! So intimidating that when I carry it out to the woodpile most billets split themselves…they don’t want hit with that thing!!! I have a fiskars x27 & love it until you get into the nastier knotted up stuff. The shockwaves through that stingy hollow handle are miserable. The Helko just blasts through them…without the sting…except to the wallet in the price difference.
Extremely good quality axe
This item we purchased as a gift for my son. Now that he has had opportunity to use it, he LOVES it! Says it cuts through hardwood logs with ease. Extremely good quality axe! I will purchase another Helko for my husbands use to replace his other brand axe.
