Hand forged German made axes and hatchets
The Rheinland Hatchet is lightweight and beautifully crafted, with a traditional German wide-bit woodworker blade. These hatchets are made in Wuppertal, Germany, near the country’s famous Rhein River Valley. The Rhein, one of Germany’s most prominent geographical features, was a historically significant source of trade and growth for civilizations in the region throughout the early and later medieval periods. Cutting axes like the Helko Rheinland Hatchet these were a daily necessity for peoples carving out towns and villages in heavily forested regions along the Rhein River. The wide blade makes this hatchet exceptionally well suited for cutting work. Each Helko Rheinland Hatchet piece is handcrafted by Helko’s master smiths with over 170 years of expertise.

If you are looking for a top of the line Hatchet, this is it!
I love the way this hatchet performs, the handle design allows a comfortable grip when choked up for fine shaving of feather sticks. The weight and size are perfect for packing on the side of my bushcraft pack. After sharpening this hatchet will shave hairs and keeps a nice edge. This is a top of the line hatchet and excels when compared to the more expensive top of the line brands. This is a great buy and I will be buying the medium size axe from Helko in the near future.

This is my third hatchet. I also have a Fiskars X7 and Marbles belt axe #9 the Helko Rheinland hatchet is substantial and has a Thick heavy handle that is balanced nicely with the hatchet head. It’s much beefier than the Fiskars and has a much bigger blade. This is a mans hatchet. I don’t mind spending extra money for a quality product. It nears a work of art status. Your friends will have hatchet envy. Get one
I bought this for my husband as an anniversary gift. He’s a burly, bearded, flannel shirt wearing, manly kind of man, so this ended up being the perfect gift for him to use on our farm. He was very impressed by the quality of it, liked the weight, the nice handle and the hatchet head and the fact that it is handmade. He’s been proudly showing it off to his buddies and has already put it to good use. It is well worth the price, it arrived early and I will definitely be buying him a full sized axe for the holidays. I highly recommend this company’s hatchets and axes, you won’t be disappointed!
A splendid ax in every respect.
Very well made.- Handle set well and of excellent hickory. The head is finished and well shaped. The blade takes and KEEPS a razor edge
Like this ")"Noticed when stropping but fixed it
Ehh. Is all i have to say.
A Keeper For Sure
This is a well made, solid and effective working tool. It is a little heavier than many other hatchets, more of a small axe than a hatchet, which means fewer strokes to get the job done. For backpacking I might opt for my GB Wildlife Hatchet simply as a concession to size and weight but for real work this is the one to pick up. The German craftsmanship is excellent and the head being reminiscent of the old Viking axes appeals to me. In short, this is a man’s hatchet. It will be a tool to take care of, be proud of, and hand down to the next generation. Good work Helko.
A "BEST" Design Hatchet for packing and function!
I am a tool engineer and I must say this is the best designed hatchet because of its shape, size and weight. It has a larger cutting edge and handle cross section than most hatchets. The one and a quarter pound head is heavy enough to get a lot of work done with less effort than a one pound head hatchet but is not too heavy to pack. It has good steel and heat treat ….You can file the butt…not the cutting edge with a file. It does come a little rough or “rustic” but axes are purchased to cut wood. A “pretty” axe that looks good but doesn’t cut well is NOT worth much. I bought two Helkos…. one was rougher than the other so I simply took a little time to file the rough ground edges to be smoother and more uniform. NOTE: the cutting edge was finished nicely and would be ready for cutting for most users, In summary…this is a great hatchet …it is my favorite hatchet…because of its functionality.
A fantastic hatchet, I was really reticent to spend this …
A fantastic hatchet, I was really reticent to spend this much but it’s a great product. Great fitment and metal working and overall quality. I’ve rigged up a pack carrier for it out of a standard US MOLLE II holster/leg extender and a couple of Maxpedition’s Tac Ties. Secure, but quickly removable from the carrier, and the carrier from the pack for belt carry if needed. I’ve only used the hatchet lightly so far, and I did improve the edge with a couple of different stones. Great weight, I’d say it’s at the upper limit for a hatchet length handle, but that head cuts well. What I didn’t see on Amazon (yet) are OEM replacement handles and parts, for spares just in case. The leather case was really dry, hit it with leather oils, bought the leather handle guard as well, soaked it and tied it on nice and tight. I didn’t use the included leather lace, but used 550 cord instead. So far so good.
Axe had loose head.
