The Hinterland Double Bit is reminiscent of bygone days, when felling axes spread across America during the 1800’s. The Double Bit quickly became a tool of necessity. A double bit advantage is having the ability to profile each blade differently, such as one edge for splitting and the other for cutting. Traditionally, one blade was commonly used in chopping undercuts for large timber to be felled, while the other was kept in reserve for fine cutting. The comfortable balance for the wielder makes this axe a capable and effective felling too.

Each Hinterland Double Bit Axe piece is handcrafted by Helko’s master smiths with over 170 years of expertise. Once the smith is satisfied with his work, the Helko crown is hammered into the cheek. No supplementary work, such as grinding, buffing, or painting is performed, thereby allowing each blade to proudly display its forging marks. As no two pieces are exactly alike, each axe is truly unique.

Excellent Double Bit Axe by Helko!

An excellent tool and a medieval looking work of art as well! This double bit is what all the other mass produced bottom rung axes wish they could be. This is my 3rd Helko axe. I keep choosing the Helko brand because although they cost a pretty penny I know that the end product will be one that was made by a craftsman working at a company that takes pride in their product. Axe head is made a very good steel and bears traditional forge marks..a nice change. Handle is of very, very good hickory and will take to a darker stain if desired. The edge on the blade arrives sharp; but not super sharp. Sharpening it isn’t a big deal and the quality steel takes and keeps a nice edge. The little bottle of rust inhibitor they provide is a nice touch. Thanks!

Have used it only once, chopped out some brush on my farm. Overall appears to be very well made, but is 6” shorter in length compared to my old axe, need more time to get used to it. Recommend using a file to sharpen, the Germán axe head is hard metal, a sharpening stone took too long. Great excercise and stress relief swinging an axe!
