Helko Black Forest Axe Review
Helko Werk is one one of the leading forgers of axes in the world. With more than 150 years experience, Helko brings it all to bear in every one of their axe tools products.
Helko Black Forest Woodworker (13562) Axe is an excellent example of the craftsmanship and detail you can expect. The 2.2 pound blade of this quality tool is made of German C45 high grade carbon steel that is drop forged, heat treated, and oil hardened.
The axe handle is hand crafted in Switzerland from sustainably sourced and Forest Stewardship Council certified USA Hickory wood, lightly lacquered, and given a black-dipped grip. Comes with a black leather blade guard.
The Black Forest Woodworker was originally designed for the renowned Black Forest of Germany. It is the quintessential tool for the experienced woodsman. Helko Black Forest Woodworker (13562) axe’s compact size bestows substantial versatility, allowing it to be used as both a lightweight work axe and a dependable packing tool. The widened blade allows this axe to perform exceptionally well as a cutting tool, while still being able to handle moderate splitting work.
Helko Werk Axe Germany
Each piece is handcrafted by Helko’s Master Smiths with over 170 years of expertise. Once the smith is satisfied with his work, the Helko crown logo is hammered into the head. No supplementary work, such as grinding, buffing, or painting is performed, thereby allowing each blade to proudly display its forging marks. As no two pieces are exactly alike, each axe is truly unique.

Holds a great edge but on the light side
Wish it had a little more head weight but i understand the lightness for a pack axe. I little hard to drive for splitting ( yes i know thats what splitting axe’s are for) but i needed an “all around axe” so i guess its as good as it gets for me with hiking. Would advise a heavier head / spitting axe for just camp ground use. I will say this, the blade holds a nice edge and doesnt seem too brittle.
An ax is a personal thing. This one took me a while to get used to but I’m really enjoying it. The handle is thick, much thicker than my plumb ax handle and even my hatchet handle. The thick handle kind of makes the weight of the head seem negligible and by that I mean it feels like you’re swinging a handle and not an ax head which takes a little getting used to.
A Stunningly Beautiful…Ax
What a beautiful product, and stellar customer service in California home office also.

Amazing quality. You will get some work done with this baby. Personally I think this is THE PERFECT AXE for bushcraft and camping. The blade shape and profile really chops with precision and depth. Its thin compared to a classic american style but its strong and the thinness aids in cutting. I think this is the perfect size because its light and small enough to carry easily and replace any hatchet, but its big and heavy enough for heavy jobs. The best of both worlds. Its also really nice to look at, beautiful craftsmanship.
Love the ax
Love the ax!! Haven’t had the opportunity to field test it yet, but will up-date the review then. In the meantime, I did add a para-cord handle guard :-)
Great design. Comes almost “shaving” sharp. I got to use this in the aftermath of our recent (and ongoing) storms. Cuts Madrona trees as though they were Doug Fir. I absolutely love this axe. Perfect angle on the cheeks to make it a cutter without getting stuck in the wood. This is the second Helko Werk woodcutting tool I have purchased. I purchased this one based on how much I liked the hatchet that I purchased. This has been a great choice. I highly recommend Helko axes.
I like that it included a sheath
This is a well balanced Axe, and came sharp from the factory. I like that it included a sheath. This axe is not exceptionally heavy, and is what I was looking for in terms of an easy to handle unit. The shape of the head, a little larger at the cutting edge than the body helps it do a great job of splitting material–something I wanted in this axe. Quality is impressive and fit and finish is excellent. A true good value, for a hard to compare to axe.
A Solid Axe, that Delivers Great Preformance
After breaking a few plastic handled axes, I was looking for a high-quality camping Axe that would allow me to easily spilt logs down to kindling. The handle had good grain and a great feel to it. The length is perfect and it fits on the side of my pack without my leg hitting the handle when trekking up grade.
When I ordered this axe I assumed I would had needed to sharpen it before use…but it came sharp as a tac! Ready to use! It’s nice and light and the handle is super comfortable! I have no problem using it for an all day job! Great quality axe!
Buy Helko…you’ll be happy you did.
Quality made axe. Well balanced and axe head forged and shaped by an obvious craftsmen. Handle is of high grade Hickory wood. The handle is a natural color but takes very, very well to stain and treatment of your choice. 2nd axe purchased from Helko and just as happy with it as the first. This isn’t a run of the mill sub-par poor steel Chinese import you come across at some big box hardware stores. These folks make high quality tools that are meant to last….a long time.
