Gransfors Bruks has earned a reputation as one of the finest makers of axes bar none. Personally, I think the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe is about as perfect as an axe can come. However, with all those accolades comes a hefty price that many consumers find hard to justify. Thankfully, there is a low priced alternative, Gerber 9-Inch Hatchet, and while it may lack the pedigree of the Gransfors Bruks Hand Hatchet, it certainly is a most capable chopper worthy of your attention.
Gerber 9-Inch Hatchet is a portable, compact backpacking axe that travels well in the kit of hikers and outdoor aficionados. The hatchet combines light heft and an ultra-sharp blade known for its edge retention. Its size makes it ideal for chopping kindling, along with splitting small logs. Gerber’s low-friction surface coating, the hardened forged steel blade of this axe slices through wood at a depth that is three times greater than average, allowing for faster chopping and maximum overall performance efficiency. The coated surface also prevents the axe blade from sticking in the wood, and its high-capacity potential prevents body strain.
This is a great splitting axe that will handle more than you expect it to for its light weight. This is SHARP and has stayed that way for three cords of wood so far.
Buy this one, over here!
Bought this axe for a family car camping trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. First, the axe is light and compact enough for my medium framed 12 y/o son to split logs endlessly (and enthusiastically). The axe really does seem to chop three times faster. It did finally get somewhat dull after a few days of abuse, but it never lost its splitting power. Overall a great buy and a good seller to deal with.
I literally have split a ½ a cord of firewood …
I literally have split a ½ a cord of firewood with this Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet since my purchase back on 12-2016. The largest piece of firewood I have split with the Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet is 3 to 5 inches round at approximately 18 inches long. Some hardwoods and Fir in a variety of different shapes. The blade is still razor sharp though the blade does need a touch up when I missed a piece of wood I was splitting. I have pounded, split wood down the middle, and slammed this Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet up and down on a chopping block until the wood would split and still the Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet has not buckled under continuous, vigorous usage. Will see down the road if the Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet holds up as I am constantly splitting firewood.
Amazingly good hatchet, really, really good in all aspects. If you need a hatchet for whatever reason, I recommend you purchase this one
Overall I am happy with the axe. Its very sharp and durable and the sheath makes it easy to store or carry. It is on the heavy side so packing it for miles may not be all that fun but it may earn a hard to come by stop in my pack. For car camping or boat camping it is perfect. It cuts very well using it on both soft and hard logs.
I love this axe
It slices… it dices… it makes julienne fries!!! I keep this in the back of my jeep for trail maintenance and a camping axe. I love this axe! It lumber jacks through stuff like Paul Bunyan himself! Highly recommended!
