Best Wood Chopping Axe for Job

The all-purpose design of the X15 Chopping Axe makes felling trees an easy job. Like every X-Series Hatchet or Axe, the X15 combines perfected weight distribution, advanced blade geometry, an ultra-sharp edge and virtually unbreakable design to maximize your performance. The axe falls gracefully yet handles surprising well. The X15’s excellent chopping ability made the task easy and enjoyable.

This combination of features allows the blade to bite three times deeper when chopping. With more blade penetration on each swing, you can chop more wood in less time, with less effort and hand strain.  Rust-proof head – the metal head has been covered with a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating. In layman’s terms, it’s like teflon for your axe head, reducing friction with every strike and protecting your axe head from rust. Nice touch!

Fiskars axes are very popular for good reason – because they make excellent products for consumers. It’s that simple. See our review on Fiskars Splitting Axes

Chopping Axe vs Splitting Axe

A chopping axe is different from splitting axe in many ways. A chopping axe is what most people associate with the word “axe.” The blade of a chopping axe is slimmer than a splitting axe, and sharper, as it’s designed to cut cross-way through the fibers of the wood. Using a chopping axe properly consists of cutting a horizontal log with many fast, downward strokes.

A hatchet and chopping axe are both designed to be used in a similar fashion, but they’re are obvious differences. A hatchet is unique mainly due to its portable nature. It’s  easy to use with one hand, good for cutting small pieces of wood and about 2/3 shorter than a full-size axe.

You can expect that every Fiskars axe has the same precision and exemplary design standards applied. In the case of their chopping tools, Fiskars claims that a cut bites “three times deeper when chopping. With more blade penetration on each swing.” Sounds impressive because it is. The X7 model is ideal for kindling and cutting small-to-medium logs, and the X15 is perfect for heavy-duty chopping tasks.

A chopping axe should not be used to split wood as it wasn’t designed for that purpose and will get stuck in the wood. Buy the appropriate axe for the job. See our review on Fiskars Splitting Axes

The axe was in perfect condition, no signs of use whatsoever

have yet to use it so I am only reviewing how the item came upon arrival. The axe was in perfect condition, no signs of use whatsoever. Item comes sharp and the sheath it comes with works well. The sheath is a bit big for my tastes, wish it had a smaller footprint by protecting just the sharp portion, but who am I to complain. Saw a neat DIY that drilled holes and used parachord in order to create a belt loop, will definitely do that with mine. Will probably cut off the handle portion to reduce the footprint as well. Plan to use this for my occasional camping trips so this comes works well within my price range and needs. I’m sure there are higher end axes out there, and for people who need a real work horse I’m sure investing in a pricer axe makes sense, but for the weekend campers such as myself, this should do the job perfectly.

This thing is the spaceaged version of a small axe. Its lightweight design, balance and size get you swingin for the fences!!! Once you get used to the motion required its like having a pack of hungry beavers with you. Makes quick work of small trees. Chop! Chop! And be careful of your body position and wrist angles when swinging an axe of any kind. Refresh your memory with a good video if you don’t get out there very often. ( thats what I did!) Great spin on an ancient tool. Folks who’ve broken and chipped these? Don’t know what to tell yah? Must have gotten a bad one and or abused the heck out of it in the old test to fail manner. Not sure I’m ever gonna go that ape E on mine :

Freaking awesome!

Truly impressed. Wasn’t certain what size to get, but 24″ x15 was offered for $30 on amazons lightning deal so I tried it.

Awesome Axe – Highly Recommended

Awesome axe, just awesome. Split a 2×4 lengthwise with no effect, just like a hot knife and butter. Read the reviews, watch the videos, you won’t find a better axe. Just know that most have a square head where the X15 has a mix of square with normal axe head.

"virtually unbreakable" but…

I had this axe less than a month and on Christmas eve right when I needed it the most, the handle shattered and the head went flying while I was splitting a small piece of firewood for kindling.

and even better than that

Chops WAY out of proportion with its size, and even better than that… splitting. This thing is a splitting monster. Seriously, i was planning to get the Fiskars splitter as well but honestly this thing does such a great job splitting, but can also chop well so I no longer see the need for the dedicated splitter. I’ll just stick to the old wedge and sledge hammer for those few really troublesome logs. realistically, if you can’t split it with this axe, just toss it on the fire whole and forget about it…

Can be used as Artwork, or as an Axe

I live in earthquake country (as does the whole world as it turns out). I keep this Axe inside the house in case of major disaster where the doors don’t open, and I have to chop my way out in an emergency. I hope I do not need to use it! This Axe is so good looking and stylish that I could hang it on the living room wall as a piece of Art. The handle is great, and the Axe head come with protection to the sharp blade. I almost want to move to Montana just so I can use this Axe every day. 5 star Axe!

Good axe at a decent price

Good axe at a decent price. I was able to chop and remove a small olive tree stump with this 24″ model and a basic shovel. Chops great and comes in a nice plastic cover to protect the blade.

Great lightweight axe.

My family and I tried it out last weekend at a campsite in Wisconsin and this axe now has a permanent place in my pack. Firewood was a ridiculous $6 for 8 small pieces so we dragged dead logs out of the wood and started chopping. This thing bites through dead wood literally like butter. It has a great powerful feel when it hits its mark and pushes through the whole log easily. I would buy this product for a friend.

Good length, nice heft

 on January 17, 2015
I will buy Fiskars products in a heartbeat, This is no exception. Good length, nice heft, weight and quality. Holds an edge and sharpens easily. The angle of blade to handle helps me put the blade where I want it. The grip helps me control the blade pretty well (I’m no expert for sure) I REALLY like the composite handle…because there seems to be a slim chance I’ll break this handle with a miss-strike, which seems to nbe too often for my liking. I’ve been using it to split log rounds (along with wedges and wood grenades. The flat end is substantial and heavy enough to work well with those) A good workout but satisfying results so far.
