I’ve had the Bear Grylls Survival Hatchet kicking around here for a few weeks now and I must say this is one of the “stand out” tools in the 2013 Bear Grylls line.

Great little hatchet, for what it is.

This is first of all, not a axe. Nor a top end hatchet. You want that, go to Gransfors Bruks or SA Wetterling as many already know.

Sweet little pack axe!

This is a great as a utility hatchet

This is a great as a utility hatchet. Note that it is pretty small and lightweight – I’m an “average” size guy and my hand takes up most of the grip if that gives you an perspective. I bought it to use for making some kindling for the fire pit from my stacked wood. Don’t expect to use this thing to cut down any branches fast…It’s probably a bit small for that task but I do think it will be a good tool to have. I gave it a 4/5 because in my opinion the case could have been designed better. You have to slide the hatched down into it and there seems to be a pretty high risk of cutting your hand in the process. Overall though I’m happy with the purchase and looking forward to using it more!

A Good Roughing Out Hatchet for beginning bushcraft wood carvers

I use this as a roughing out carving axe because I am a beginning wood carver spoon and kuksa carver but I didn’t want to purchase the gransfors axe at 4 times the price. I am a woman and this axe is light enough that I don’t face arm fatigue and sharp enough to do what I ask of it. Holds a good edge and sharpens easily. A perfect first roughing out tool! Great price, quality tool.

Lil’ Hatchet that could

This small, compact wonder is SHARP! So the only difficult thing is figuring out how to safely remove this hatchet from the heavy duty belt holder while wearing the rig, without self injury. Once you get that down, and can do it fast, you are good to go. I have not yet swung this at a tree, but I figure given the weight is more so at the head, it will do some good damage to whatever you swing it at, zombie, tree, whatever.

Nice Tool

This is a great hatchet, especially for being a flashy name brand (many assume the Bear Grylls line to be a gimmick). But this tool is more of a replacement for a knife than a hatchet and the reason for me saying that is if you notice the head of this hatchet is very slim. This helps with keeping it light weight but makes splitting wood very difficult as it sinks into logs and large branches. When you place the blade on the log you wish to split and hit the back of the hatchet with another branch or heavy object to achieve the split, the hatchet just sinks into the log and gets stuck. It is for this reason why other hatchets and axes have a head that gets wider towards the back. The advantage this has over every other hatchet is the ability of control when making feather sticks or something similar. Since you can choke up towards the top of the handle, you can really control and apply pressure where needed. Overall a pretty good tool and nice addition to any backpack or camping trip.

  1. This survival hatchet is the next best thing besides having Bear Grylls by your side. The axe delivers and performs as promised. Bear’s survival guide could be the difference maker on your journey. All in all, best survival axe you can buy. Why take a chance when you don’t have to? Safe journeys to all.
